Can you sum up the debate about federate budget that happened in the US last night?

I know what the outcomes was, but I guess I just don't understand why republicans were fighting for massive spending cutbacks. I keep hearing them saying "as painful as it is, etc etc, spending cutbacks are necessary for the security of this country's future, etc etc" What would be the benefit of cutting federal spending????
